Progress so Far... 10/27/16 6:30pm

October 27, 2016

Day 30:

Today marks one month since Josh's accident and we thought it would be good to take a step back and update everyone on Josh's progress from the beginning until now and maybe clear up any confusion there might be on his condition.

  • Josh remains in a coma.

  • All his internal organs are functioning well.

  • Josh is breathing on his own but has a trachea tube in place so he can be suctioned if needed.

  • He no longer has pneumonia but he is working through some chest congestion and a bacterial infection.

  • He only has to wear a neck brace during physical therapy. PT consists of:

    • Sitting him up

    • Moving him in ways to cause him to catch his balance

    • Stimulating his senses

    • Range of motion exercises

    • Riding a recumbent bike while lying in bed

  • He has moved his left arm on a fairly consistent basis in response to stimulus (reflex) but it has also been localized (meaningful movement). He has also moved his arm while lying still in bed with no one touching him. He has also moved his right arm and both legs at times.

  • He opens his eyes and has tracked mom’s voice at times.

  • His jaw is still wired shut and will remain so until mid-November.

  • He has moved his lips, snarled, and grimaced. At one point something was dropped on the floor making a loud crash. He grimaced in response.

  • He has had four surgeries so far (2 neck, one facial, and an initial brain/facial surgery when he arrived).

  • When mom talks to him his blood pressure rises!

  • On the coma scale, which is a 3 to 15 scale, Josh is an 8. He was a 3 when he arrived at the hospital. This is a real tipping point. We want him to start blowing up that scale!

  • If you are wondering how he looks, he looks just like the Josh everyone knows. They did a wonderful job putting him back together. He still has his dashing good looks, much like his brother. He is stable and ready to go to San Antonio!

Prayer Requests for Tonight:

1.) Expedited VA process.

2.) That we would see more response from the right side of Josh's body, and in front of the doctors.

3.) Logistics for Josh and our family in the transition to San Antonio.

4.) For Josh to move up the coma scale!

Isaiah 41:10

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
